Phi Beta Kappa Lecture: “Marked and Modern: 20th Century Jewish Artists”
Sep 14 @ 7:30 pm

Marked and Modern: 20th-Century Jewish Artists
Although their careers were extraordinarily successful as modern artists and their work seemingly has no comparable form or content, the works of three great 20th-century painters still convey unsuspected affinities deriving from their common Jewish heritage. Marc Chagall, Ben Shahn, and Mark Rothko were all born in Eastern Europe at roughly the same moment–the turn of the century–yet their careers diverged radically. What do they share? And what does this tell us about the situation of Jewish artists (or indeed, of any “minority” artists) in the art world of the twentieth century?

Larry Silver, Farquhar Professor of Art History at Penn, is a specialist in painting and graphics of Northern Europe, particularly Germany and the Netherlands, during the era of Renaissance and Reformation. He has served as president of the College Art Association as well as of the Historians of Netherlandish Art, and was recently honored with the University’s Lindback Award for Teaching Excellence. Publications include Rubens, Velázquez, and the King of Spain; The Essential Dürer; Rembrandt’s Faith; Marketing Maximilian; Peasant Scenes and Landscapes; Hieronymus Bosch; and a general survey, Art in History. He has organized a number of print exhibitions, among them Grand Scale: Monumental Prints in the Age of Dürer and Titian and Graven Images, dealing with professional engravers of the 16th-century Netherlands.
